The Importance of Self-Love

Many people believe that there are good emotions and bad emotions, but I’d like to think that there are simply a various range of emotions that aren’t good or bad - they just are what they are:  emotions.  However sometimes emotions are sort of overwhelming because they can come all at once, and our brain totally goes into overdrive, not really knowing how to comprehend all of these feelings.  In these situations it’s important to just “ride the wave” so to speak, meaning it’s important to rock your feelings, and embrace them all as they come.  And I am here to explain how to do just that.

The Funk

    Ahh the famous “funk”.  Getting into a funk... not always the best. When I say “getting into a funk”, I’m talking about those days where we just feel off.  Those feelings where nothing feels quite right.  Maybe you just want to cry, maybe you are grumpy, or maybe you just don’t want to be around other people, (or maybe all three!).  Like for me, I get into these weird moods where I just don’t really want to talk to anybody.  I don’t want to be around others, and I am an emotional mess.  You see, I’m a positive person, so when I get into negative moods I kind of spiral out of control.  If any of this sounds familiar to you, then here are some ways that can help you get out of it.

1. Go for a drive.

 I don’t know if you are anything like me, but I absolutely love driving.  I love exploring, and getting lost, and finding new places in my area.  If you are in a funk, try going on a drive.  Drive through the backroads, drive up a road until your way up high, find a beautiful place that can be yours.  Getting out of the house is key to getting out of this funk, so get up and do it.

2. Find your safe space.

There is a park near my house that is really beautiful.  The feeling I get when I’m at this park is pure peace, so anytime I feel off, I drive to this park.  I sit on a blanket and read, think, draw, whatever.  So find this space.  Find this place in your area that makes you happy, distracted, and most of all - content.  It could be inside or outside, just make sure you are in a place that makes you feel peaceful.  

3. Be around other people.

Even if you are in a mood where you don’t really want to be around others, force yourself to do just that.  If you spend time around people that make you happy, you very well might get distracted and forget about why you were feeling so off.  And if being around people doesn’t help, then listen to that - explore that.  If you truly need to be alone, then of course do so - but in my experience spending time with others tends to make me forget about my funk altogether.

4. Explore these emotions.

It’s okay that you feel off, and you don’t have to question yourself on why that is.  Sometimes we just feel low, and that is okay!  Jut go with it.  Accept that you feel off, and that it will eventually go away.  This funk isn’t permanent, so it’s okay to just embrace it.  Write about how you’re feeling, or share your feelings with others, just don’t let it consume you.  

5. Do what you love.

Everybody has some sort of a hobby.  I personally really like playing and writing music; I also really enjoy singing.  Sometimes doing something that requires you to think about something other than your emotions really helps - so do just that. Doing what we love tends to make us happy, so do what you love and love yourself doing it!

6. Spoil yourself!

This may be my all time favorite solution to being in a funk - spoil yourself!  Sit in front of the TV and watch all your favorite movies, eat your favorite foods, take a long bath, go shopping, buy yourself flowers.  Treat yourself!  You deserve to be pampered and loved!


We all deserve to love and take care of ourselves.  We all feel off at times and it’s so important to remember it’s okay and normal.  So follow these tips, I promise it will make you feel so much better.  And if your funk feels like it is never ending, then it’s important to express that to somebody else. Communicating these emotions to others can be incredibly beneficial.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help, because we all need a little help sometimes.  We all deserve this, so give it a shot.  You may love the results!
